Addiction is a psycho-social-spiritual disease. (If addicts could sit at home alone and stop using drinking an using drugs, they wouldn't be addicts!) Fortunately, addiction is a common disease, and a lot is known about how to find freedom and recovery from this devastating problem. Those who suffer from addiction can be considered as having two people in one body. One of them is the unique person evolved from their unique experiences in the world, and the other is their "addict". The key to recovery is learning ways to prevent the "addict" side from controlling your behavior. It helps to imagine there are two completely different colored thoughts inside your head. "Blue thoughts" that come from your true personality, and "red thoughts" that come from the "addict". To get well and stay well you need to learn to recognize which color each particular thought is, and successfully make the decision to only act on your "blue thoughts". Addicts need to separate their thoughts from their behavior. While this is simple to say, it goes against our human primal instincts. In the normal state of affairs we think, then we act. Millions of addicts have already found the road to long-term sobriety, and you can too! The wonderful news is these men and women gather together regularly to share their individual knowledge and skills with one another, and anyone who wants to listen. The "group" can survive and make the right decisions where each individual alone can not. One on one personal counseling, group therapy, and active participation in 12 Step recovery programs are all essential parts of finding relief from addiction. Humans are accustomed to using our intellect and thinking to address problems, but with drug addicts and alcoholics the "thinker" is broken! At SLOARC we provide counseling and guidance along with prescription medications to give you the tools to find long- term recovery and sobriety.
