Alcohol and other drugs of abuse act like poisons in our bodies. The more we study drug addiction and alcoholism, the more harmful effects of these toxins we discover. Alcohol has been abused for thousands of years so we have a wealth of knowledge regarding the negative impact of drinking on our health. Chronic alcohol abuse causes irreversible changes in the brain (encephalopathy), gastritis and stomach ulcers, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), liver inflammation and scarring (cirrhosis), death of the nerves (neuropathy), irreversible dysfunction of the heart (cardiomyopathy), and these are only some of the physical effects! Aside from physical problems, there are damages to our emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
